SKEG 1 ! – A Wet & Wild Weekend !   Leave a comment

A fantastic weekend enjoyed by many paddlers from as far afield as Portsmouth and Fort William

The weather was stacked against us and I think the coastguard was surprised by me ringing in to say that 40 paddlers were taking to the water! However the conditions didn’t  dampen spirits and enthusiam.

Saturday morning saw many paddlers honing their skills in handling laden kayaks and the fundamentals of strokes before hitting the North Easterly swell in Runswick Bay.

A series of exciting rescue scenarios involving the RNLI ensued with “casualties” being taken aboard. Broken collar bones, spread out paddlers, ill paddlers , and lost paddlers were all tackled by the Staithes inshore lifeboat team.

For those who didn’ t fancy the sea state there was foraging for sea weeds and seafood before a cooking session of limpet chowder, sweet potato and seaweed curry followed by a less foraged pudding of chocalate chip brioche french toast with caramelised rum bananas and cream- all cooked on an open fire .

The evening saw talks on fishing from a kayak from Ken Oliver and Greenland from Nige Robinson who has just brought out an expedition skills video.

Liquid refreshment was provided by the local Cropton Brewery with beers such as Yorkshire Moors, and Honey Gold.

Sunday dawned a little less wild and many folks decided to get some top tips on surfing . Lunch on the beach with soup on the fire and Kelly kettles roaring was an excellent opportunity for folks to try different boats with P&H, Rockpool , Venture, North Shore and NDK available.

The afternoon was spent doing No trace awareness awards, navigation on the move and some rough water handling.

It was a great weekend , thanks to all those people attending

and the hard work of the coaches …….. here’s to SKEG 2  !
